Like many from the Midwest, Kathy and David Malak were tired of the cold and decided to head south. “We wanted a warmer climate. We wanted to enjoy four seasons, but didn’t want bad winters,” Kathy says.
Their search for a kinder, gentler lifestyle led them to build a 7,000 square-foot custom home on an acre of land in Weddington, NC. But they soon realized that two people didn’t need that much space. So, they began looking for a home that was low maintenance and would allow them the freedom to travel, instead. “We weren’t thinking about a 55-plus community,” confesses Kathy. “Honestly, we were just looking for less land, and a smaller house that was easier to maintain.”
So, how did they wind up at NewStyle Communities’ Augusta Place at Laurel Creek in Rock Hill, SC? “We wanted to move to South Carolina because the real estate taxes are cheaper, and they have the senior tax exemption. Then, we just started going around and looking at stuff.”
The Malak’s started off looking for a home with two bedrooms on the main floor, taking into account Kathy’s older sister who visits often and has a hard time going up stairs. A friend from their neighborhood had just moved to Augusta Place, so they decided to take a look.
Kathy had made a list of 25 things she wanted “extra” before she decided to move – and NewStyle was able to do those things. The homes were low maintenance, the location was nice, and there is a hospital nearby. Though they were already mostly sold on Augusta Place, Kathy asked their realtor to give them reasons NOT to move there. So they visited more communities, but nothing compared to what they had seen at Augusta Place.
“We really liked the more traditional look of the homes here,” notes Kathy. “I love the all-brick look, and that it’s maintenance free. We were really sold when our sales person, Kathy Campbell, told us there were plans to build a clubhouse. Augusta Place had the whole package!”
After choosing a floor plan – the Vita – the process of choosing features and finishes was easy. Kathy had already built a custom home so “I had a good idea of what I wanted. And the team was very eager to try to do whatever I wanted to have done.” Construction managers Brad and Glen are “excellent! They were so easy to work with.”
And what about Kathy’s list of “extras”? “Well, we were the first ones to ask to have the patio changed to an indoor room with drywall and heat. Since then, 4 or 5 people have come through our house and then asked for that upgrade!”
The Malak’s also chose to have a larger lot, since outdoor living space was important. “We’re kind of the ‘party house’,” Kathy laughs. “We have a full outdoor kitchen, a fire pit, two big big patio tables, and a large garden. I love gardening!” And she really appreciates the curb appeal of their home. “I love that the garages are in the back – the street looks so clean.”
Kathy says the NewStyle team is what impressed her the most. “From the first meeting with the sales team, it was great. They were helpful, not pressuring. When we did our custom home, it was not a pleasant experience. It made us nervous for this. But our experience at Augusta Place was completely the opposite. Everyone was so positive!”
Since moving into Augusta Place in 2016, Kathy has been working on getting the rest of the community more involved. “When we first moved in, there wasn’t a lot of communication among the neighbors.” She started a phone list with all of the names of new people that moved in. It gave her the opportunity to meet everyone, and it helped other residents acclimate, and remember the names of their neighbors. Now, even the sales team uses it! She’s also been volunteering on the Social Committee, getting fellow residents to come out to community events such as the Christmas party and the opening of the courtyard when the weather warms up.
What are she and David enjoying the most about their new lifestyle? “The freedom! Now, we can be free and travel. We lock up the house and go and enjoy life!”
Augusta Place at Laurel Creek is expected to closeout in late-2018. The model home is located at 531 Chalmers Row Rock Hill, SC 29732.
